Things have certainly been busy for Mr McKean and his Empirical allies. They've had a busy year of gigging round London, producing some videos, playing across the UK over the festival season (the highlight being of course playing in the Acoustic Tent at this year's Glastonbury) ... and generally writing new material. I first saw Tom Mckean et al about a year ago, funnily enough also in the Borderline. That was a pretty good gig. However they have really moved their performances up a notch or two since then ... and now bass player Ed Miller has been fully integrated into the band the whole ensemble really are a tight machine. Ostensibly this gig was to launch their new "double A-side" single, This is the Year / Smile of An Innocent Child , and as such a vehicle, the evening was a great success. From the opening acapella chorus of Old Fashioned Morphine, which segued nicely into the rousing Hold Onto Me, through to old favourites such as Little Something and One Thing on My mind, the numbers were all dispatched with equal applomb. The "headline" song of the new single This is the Year was probably the best I'd heard it live. All too soon however, the set was over, and the band were playing out to their signature finale Old Fashioned Morphine - which had neatly bracketed the entire set. There only remained a quick encore of a new song and the Emperor's had won over another packed venue of Borderline punters. They made it look all too easy. However, I know how hard the boys have worked this year and getting the performances as consistently emotive, and of such high quality for every performance, is not something to be taken too lightly. Hopefully the single (which is available from pretty much every online download service imaginable ) will get them to the wider audience they so richly deserve. Maybe "This IS the year" ...
