The Long Insiders at O2 Academy2 Oxford Review

The Long Insiders @ The Zodiac
They’ve toured the world as 90s Britpoppers Thurman, received major critical acclaim with country-rockers Four Storeys and – according to rock mythology – even fronted a metal group in their early teens. The brothers Kenny have been sorely missed on the scene for some years now and their re-emergence as The Long Insiders sees the highly anticipated return of some of Oxford’s finest musicians to the fore, but with a deliberately different twist to anything they’ve done before. Siblings Nick and Simon along with old pal Dan Goddard – former sticks man with The Nubiles – join forces with sultry Welsh stunner Sarah Dodd to ‘create music for spies visiting a David Lynch film set to see PJ Harvey and Nick Cave duet.’ Following their stunning performance as support for The Killers-approved Low Vs Diamond, the sharp-suited lounge lizards bring their vintage kit and ‘60s-inspired soundscapes back to their old stomping ground for only their third show since forming the supergroup of sorts in October last year. Opening with Changeling, quickly followed by crowd pleaser No Class and through to the show-stopping All The Tears, the quartet transport the crowd from a martini-soaked world of espionage through Ennio Morricone-inspired spaghetti westerns to emotional alt-surf melodies. Exchanging mischievous glances and back-handed compliments in equal measure, guitarist Nick and vocalist Sarah command their audiences like a modern day Johnny Cash and June Carter starring in Tarantino’s latest cult flick - with the lady in red forming a wry smile on her ruby lips as she sips from a cheeky glass of vin rouge. With style in abundance, musicianship to die for and all those killer tunes, The Long Insiders will leave you shaken and stirred! Marc West (BBC Oxford)
