The Long Insiders at The Troubadour Review

The Long Insiders @ The Troubadour
I saw The Long Insiders here a few months back and I was really impressed then. It seems like they have gone away and done alot of hard work, or alot of gis, or something. Thier confidence has gone through the roof. Last time their act was what I would've called moody, at the risk of making them sound like a bunch of teenagers, which they definately are not. The female lead is very much woman and seemed to come out of her self this evening mixing seduction with the venom she shows for her partner in Crime, Nick Kenny. Nick is the reason I'm here - hailing from Oxford I've seen him in various musical incarnations but fair doos - the boy done well. Where have you been hiding that gravelly, sexy voice? Or perhaps he has been doing alot of fast living since last time I saw him play. Anyway - I have been on their MySpace and liked the tracks but they translate so much better in performance and there were a few new ones out tonight that blow the oldies out of the water. Particularly a track near the end of the set called (I think) 'No Baby No'. At least those ore the most repeated lyrics and that's what I'd call it. There was a moment mid set where Nick lost one of his pedals and momentarily his cool and I wondered if the slick stylings were about to slip - but no. A couple of dry quips from the girl in the red dress and they were back on track. It was a great end to a very mixed bag on offer at The Troubadour this evening, but it's always a pleasure to be here - if only for the food.
