After winning The X Factor back in 2009, Joe McElderry was dropped by his record company after only one album, despite the album, Wide Awake, selling over 100,000 copies. In 2011, Joe then went on to win Popstar To Operastar, which proved he was still in demand as he was during his X Factor stint. After a successful change in direction with an album of classical covers and a tour, he then embarked on a Christmas album. Joe is now back with a brand new album, Here's What I Believe, and EF had the chance to see him perform the songs from this new album.

Thursday night, the setting for Joe’s London album launch was the beautiful St James Church in Picadilly Circus. An intimate venue, with the lights dimmed so that the atmosphere was perfect, the 300 strong-audience were waiting in anticipation for their man to come on stage.

Arriving shortly after 8.30pm, Joe made his appearance by walking through the audience, much to the delight of his fans. He then launched into his first song, What Have I Done, which he co-wrote, and immediately had the crowd singing along.

He then went on to sing his versions of When I Need You, Something's Got A Hold Of My Heart, Queen’s Love Of My Life and Demi Lovato’s Skyscraper. This showcased Joe’s amazing and powerful voice, and in a Church, it made his voice shine even more so. He began Love Of My Life by singing accapella style, and then when the string quartet came in, it felt magical.

One of our highlights was How We Love, which was written by Nashville singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman. Joe also sings one of her songs on his new album, with Beth on backing vocals. Our other highlight was To Have A Broken Heart, It reminded EF of Michael Buble’s cover of Home.

Joe sang some old favourites, including Ambitions, and belted out Katy Perry’s hit single, Part Of Me. The audience were on their feet dancing away!

And with that, the audience were chanting for more. And more is what they got! He came back and sang a three-song encore, beginning with If You Love Me, his X Factor single – The Climb, and his latest single from the album, Here’s What I Believe.

Joe certainly treated his audience to both old and new songs that night, and the reaction from the crowd proved his presence alone is still as strong as ever. Performing for two hours, its clear for everyone that Joe loves singing and pleasing his audience. Our only criticism is we would have liked him to sing Don’t Stop Believing', as it is the song that, for EF, won him The X Factor back in 2009. Despite this, we’re sure his fans didn’t mind, and everyone left happy, entertained and smiling.
