Foals at Audio Review

Foals @ Audio, Brighton
Clumped on stage like 11-year-old schoolboys around a football, with guitars held tight around their necks, Foals are an accident waiting to happen. They look like a band but crank like mining machinery, managing to narrowly miss cracking each other on the noggin with their thrusting instruments. Their disco grind is less about tunes and more about pumping out rhythms that are impossible to escape, that seep into your body and take hold. Foals arrive clutching a set of songs as slanted as their fringes, but what with the flying limbs around the room, tonight is about audience participation. Bleeping, throbbing debut single ‘Hummer’ rears its head early on ahead of an epic instrumental. "This is a little intermission," the audience is told. There’s no ice cream though, which is a shame since this show is like a fan-assisted oven, what with all the hot body rocking. The interaction with the crowd is upped a notch when frontman Yannis asks, "What’s up with this barrier?" He goes on, "If anyone wants to come up here during this gig, feel free. We’re not going to mug you." As ordered, a bunch of revellers fill the borders of the stage with dance moves before management come and shoo them off. When he isn’t coaxing the crowd into their pony pen, Yannis is trying to get them on side. "Brighton is our adoptive home," he shares with us. "We’re from somewhere where people wear a lot more tweed and a lot more monocles. But Brighton is better." by Jim Merrett
