Field Music at The Cluny Review

FIELD MUSIC @THE CLUNY, NEWCASTLE

The Cluny is completely packed for the homecoming of local(ish) boys Field Music, at one time a Frankenstein beast of ex-Futureheads and Maximo Park members, and now comprised of the Brewis brothers, guitarist Kev Dosdale and new bassist Andrew Lowther. Opening with seamless gems including ‘Them That Do Nothing’ and ‘Let’s Write A Book’ from 2010 release ‘Measure’, they interweave past hits with new material.

Fresh additions from new LP ‘Plumb’ include the minor chord-driven ‘Start The Day Right’, which has the crowd entranced in its otherworldly, Pink Floyd-esque vocals, and ‘A New Town’, which boasts an impressive and irregular 70s bassline. ‘Sorry Again Mate’ stands out as the four-piece increase the melodic drama in fragile fashion. They have the presence and creativity of a larger outfit without any hint of bravado, and appear completely at ease as they entertain a diverse crowd. There is an endearing eccentricity that makes even the most brief of interludes (see: ‘It’s Okay To Change’ at 58 seconds) a joy to listen to.

Frontman David Brewis muses on ‘(I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing’ that “eloquence is overrated” but it is something that the Field Music boys have in abundance, especially on their newer work. Combined with their well-honed leftfield brand of prog and stirring instrumentals, they evoke a bygone era. Hopefully, pastures new for Field Music won’t necessarily mean less soul or mystery as they court the mainstream with ‘Plumb’, their fourth album. Their pliable line-up, however, as well as a three-year hiatus between 2007 and 2010 marks them out as renegades, and as the night ends it remains impossible to know what to expect from them next.
