blues and burgandy
I just arrived as their first song was a few bars in which was ace, but i was a bit shocked they weren't on last. i saw these guys on sunday up at the boogaloo's humble acoustics fest (cheers insole btw) and was blown away by their musicianship so jumped at the chance to see em a few days later at my local music hole. The lads were cutting a fine image in their dinnersuits and burgandy shirts glammed up a bit with some fine rock n roll disarray. Leading the charge is Dan Grabiner. He has a powerful voice that can be bellowed off mike or reduced to a plosive whisper. I was catching some thoughts of tom waits meeting the kings of leon for a jam at jim morrisons. Dan is a proper front man who keeps percussion with a range of cunningly used devices. The tuneful trick with the hose was particularly cool mate. Building up stomping rhythms on the guitar and stealing a bunch of harmonies was Justin Gartry. cornerstone lad. On the left was Joshua Elliot on the sax, bax, accordian, ukelele and (how awesome...) saw. Backing up the manic antics of Dan, Josh held his own corner with some brilliantly understated comebacks. He carried the songs effortlessly and was a real pleasure to catch play. I figured cos of the polished nature of their performances, they were regular on-the-uppers and the boogaloo gig was a casual one for em. It was a nice touch when they told us we were the first fans that had seen em once, then just come back for them again. cool! i just wish they had been on a bit later cos some of our (fairly sizable) team couldnt get to the pub by 820.. ne'ermind. The have some sites up detailing their upcomign gigs and stuff, myspace, facebook etc.. checkout thejokerandthethief.co.uk for all of that jazz Im gonna try and make the 19th of sept at the cross kings, i reckon they'll own it. cheers and beers robserious
