On my way to see Aloe Blacc I had high expectations and it is fair to say that he lived up to them with his incredibly soulful voice, vast energy levels and glowing personality. He was punctual in non-superstar fashion and delivered over an hour of high quality live music.
Although the effects were limited to light changes, his stage presence and dance moves, alongside his equally talented band were enough to satisfy fans and super-fans alike. Anything more would have seemed inappropriate, as Aloe insisted early on that it wasn’t a concert but a party and he wanted us all to have fun, even saying "don’t worry about what we’re doing on stage, just dance". The result? Everyone danced and the gig became a party. He interacted with his public throughout the concert sharing a bit of his stardom with us all.
Blacc performed his famous hits including ‘I need a Dollar’ and ‘Green Lights’, adding a few twists after explaining why he’d written the songs. Blacc revealed his compassion for people who have lost their jobs and homes during recession but also was clear to remind us all that sometimes, things can go your way. He demonstrated his vocal abilities in a relaxed manner, proving that singing was second nature and smiled throughout the show, even convincing us that he was as happy to be sharing his evening with us as we were with him.
All in all, Aloe is a true star who adds something new to the music scene with his contagious rhythm and infectious smile.
