The New York band met whilst at high school in Long Island bonding over a love of Agnostic Front. They frequented what was the punk and new wave Mecca CBGB on weekends and formed a band from the influence induced from these tenebrous evenings. Their name was supposed to be temporary after a promoter requested one from the as yet unnamed group. They stole the name from a popular drug at the time - quaaludes. This is basically a sedative-hypnotic that can give you a boner. Due to it’s large pill form the drug grew to be known as ‘Gorilla Biscuits’ this was chosen over the myriad other slang terms. Here are some choice snippets from the others; Leg Spreaders, Joe Fridays, Down and Dirtys, Crump Barers and Ludes. The name stuck with the band for the rest of their future. Since their formation in the 80s Gorilla biscuits have helped define upbeat melodic hardcore, they have been cited as a singular influence by a generation of hardcore bands.
