It takes but a single peep of The Staves music to be converted to their vision, we genuinely believe that is all it takes. Whether this ‘peep’ takes shape in the form of a live show snippet -or- a 6 Music radio spin, there is no denying the magnetic power of the Hertfordshire sisters’ music making. So warm, so captivating, so affirming, so wholesome, everyone needs this kind of sound in their lives at some stage; whether it has been a long week, or a long day in the sunshine, The Staves are for each and every occasion.

We first learnt about their mission way back in 2012 when supporting Bon Iver in concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Sharing a stage with one of the finest outfits of their ‘scene’ did nothing to over shadow what they had to offer, and while Bon Iver put on a stunning set of classic song after classic song, we left thinking more about the support act than the headliner.

The Staves premiere new LP - If I Was
This is probably why Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) began working with the trio shortly after; he got sucked into their ways just as we did, and this magnetism saw a series of recording sessions in Vernon’s Wisconsin studio develop into The Staves sophomore LP ‘If I Was’. The LP is not actually scheduled for physical release until late March but dropped online yesterday

Speaking on the release, Justin Vernon revealed…

"It’s the way a record about deep things needs to happen: over a period of time, in a singular place, with enough time to reflect on themselves and express. I’ve made a lot of records now in my life and I have to say, making this one with them altered and changed me."

We are listening right now. As expected, ‘If I Was’ is a stunning release, packed to the rafters with warmth and soul. Having a tricky Tuesday?
We strongly recommend a Staves session to calm the nerves -or- to wake up the senses. This is one of those albums that has the capacity to do both.
