Neil Young finally receives a Grammy!

Legendary Canadian songwriter Neil Young has been given his first ever Grammy award.

From his work with the seminal West Coast group Buffalo Springfield to his latest album, Neil Young has led one of the most celebrated, confounding and ultimately rewarding careers in rock music.

Whether working with the pre-grunge squall of Crazy Horse or sitting alone with his acoustic Neil Young is capable of leading an audience on a dizzying journey. Yet somewhat bizarrely, the singer has never been given a Grammy award.

Until now. Neil Young picked up 'Best Boxed Set Or Special Limited Edition Package' at last night's ceremony in Los Angeles. Accepting the trophy in a pre-telecast ceremony Neil Young said simply: "Thanks a lot, everybody".

Sadly for Neil Young, the singer was to be denied a second Grammy later on in the ceremony missing out on 'Best Solo Rock Vocal' to Bruce Springsteen.

Perhaps the writing should have been on the wall for the Canadian songwriter, who had been honoured by the Grammy awards earlier that day. In a special concert a number of top talents re-interpreted some of his best known material.

Named as Musicare's 'Person Of The Year' the four hour program was compered by Jack Black and contained performances from Elton John, James Taylor, Norah Jones and many more.

"I'd forgotten how many songs I'd written," the 64-year-old musician said. Neil Young's old band mates Stephen Stills, David Crosby and Graham Nash closed the ceremony, The Canadian Press reports.

"We made some of the best music of our lives with you, man," said Crosby, a previous MusiCares honoree.

"It's been a great night. It wore me out," Neil Young said. "Now I've got to go back and try and write some songs."
