Mumiy Troll interview!

Who are Mumiy Troll? I hear you say. Well, although you may not have heard of them, yet, they are maybe the biggest band in Russia, ever. There name comes from a collection of Finnish Children's books named "Moomin Troll" and they have been together for donkeys years. They single-handedly created their own trend of music in Russia, that has been copied all over the country by wannabes and even fellow contemporaries of the mainstream. WIth long standing members, 8 Studio albums, a full -length cartoon movie and track's on russian films such as the infamous Night Watch, In which the lead singer Illya plays a Vampire, Mumiy Troll are a Russian force to be reckoned with. They want to be in your music players, in your Ipods, in your cars and most importantly in your ears, at all times.

We caught up with Lead singer Illya Lagutenko to talk about the band, his brief run in the army and wild-life conservation.  Here's what he had to say:

I’m not sure you gotta stay as a unit forever but it would help if we flew to our neighbouring Galaxyilya lagutenko

1) What are the major differences between the music industry in Russia and
the UK?

I guess the further you are, the less the differences. Pirate downloads kick-started by Russians are dominating the UK market these days, so lots of artists have to rely on non-stop touring.  We have Russian versions of Glastonbury, and most new Russian acts sing in English, however, NME did not survive in Russia, which is the main difference these days.

2) You've been together for almost 30 years now, do you have any messages
 for your younger selves?

I’m still trying to fullfill my touring map which I drew when i was 8 years old. I had a bigger plan really!

3) What is your tip for other bands on how to stay as a unit and stay
together?

I’m not sure you gotta stay as a unit forever but it would help if we flew to our neighbouring Galaxy.

4) Vladivostok is your first English language album, what led to the change of tongue?

Random international appearances brought us new fans that wanted to sing-along but couldn’t understand Russian.

5) Where is your favourite place to tour?

I Love China. The Chinese historically do not get the idea of rock ‘n’ roll. Being an alien with an alien mission is challenging though and the food is fantastic, plus the Jeans and Converse are cheaper..but not anymore unfortunately!

6) Would you say that your time in the Russian Air Navy has affected
your sound or your approach to music?

I spent two years on isolated island where the air carriers and planes practiced their shooting.  We were not informed in advance on HQ plans so most of the time we were sat alert and waited. I’ve never ever had that much free time to think. So, some of the songs were written there as it was the only thing to entertain yourself.

7) Tell us about your wildlife conservation activity. When did you
realise you could make a difference and how important has this venture
 been for you?

I’m originally from the Russian far east, home of the unique taiga forest which is covered in snow in the winter and also home to Siberian tigers and hungry sharks. Funnily enough I did not care about Tigers until I got to the UK. Wildlife activities are very important to English people. So I’ve learned a lot about the place of my origin and became a patron of one of the first tiger conservation societies in Russia. It was the Anglo-Russian AMUR fund.

8) During the Soviet Government rule you were deemed as socially dangerous. Where there moments in your illustrious career where people tried to stand in your way due to your beliefs and ideas?

I always thought it was a joke. Those KGB officials , whoever publish those lists, hardly knew that Mumiy Troll was a teenage band from Vladivostok... They probably thought the name had the same appeal as Sex Pistols or Black Sabbath. These days those ex-Young communist party leaders have become "new oligarch Russia" advocates.. We just wanted something different than official TV starts... same as today.

9) You have had the opportunity to work with some amazing producers on
this record and previously from what I understand your other efforts were
self produced.  What prompted the decision to change and how has the
 transition been?

I always wanted the magic "third man" party to come and make all those decisions for me. Those big time producers are usually very sweet experienced guys. It’s very interesting to see where any type of collaboration will lead you in the end. Unfortunately no big name will buy you an instant classic status but only time will tell.  Hard work and touring the continents is the only way to get respect from an international audience

10) Please tell us a little about Ikra.tv, what it is, and why it was
 created?

It started as an idea to establish a place for our fans, where they
could share their musical tastes, exchanging their favourite music and videos outside their passion for Mumiy Troll. We wanted to help them see how big the world of music is. IKRA was born in Russia, the place where maybe you can start to build something of your own.
