Classic footage of David Bowie performing one of his biggest hits The Jean Genie will be broadcast on BBC 2 this evening. The Top Of The Pops christmas special will play a selection of hits from the show's back catalogue, with the newly found Bowie footage as the star attraction.
Retired cameraman John Henshall Pulled the exclusive footage from the doldrums, years after the Beeb had proclaimed the footage as lost. Unaware that the BBC had not kept a copy of their own, Henshall explained…
""I just couldn't believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn't be mad enough to wipe a tape like that," he said earlier this month."
The live footage, which originally aired on Top of The Pops on January 4, 1973, was thought to be lost after the BBC were forced to wipe dozens of VHS tapes as part of a cost-cutting operation. Be sure to tune in to watch brand-new-old-school-unseen-reborn Bowie tonight.
