LIVEMUSIC INTERVIEW: SPECTOR @ BETHNAL GREEN WORKING MEN'S CLUB

We're not wholly sure what 'ones to watch' means. Ones to watch 'in the shower'? Perhaps ones to watch 'in Dr. Quinn Medicine woman'? Either way Spector have been listed in myriad polls, citing them as 'Ones To Watch 2012'. At last night's gig, in one of London's cosiest venues, Spector proved themselves entirely watchable. The band, at first glance, has a smattering of hipster/style over substance failings but as the evening drew on this proved a fallacy.

Spector's set was a full-bodied hour of Tune after Tune - yes that is tune with a capital T. They have enough bangers on their setlist that they feel comfortable to drop Xmas single 'Grey Shirt & Tie' as their second track. It will be released in December, featuring a remix by The Big Pink, and is a truly moving, beautiful song. The rest of the set didn't disappoint as they moved with mercurial urgency through their catalogue. Spector is embodied with meaning, I have no fucking clue what that meaning is, but the band sits over a bedrock of something special.

In conjunction with a recent appearance on Jules Holland, alongside Noel Gallagher, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Bjork, the band are being tipped by all tastemakers in business. Alien invasion/ Armageddon withstanding, 2012 may well be Spector's year.

I'm not sure I want to see lead man Fred Macpherson in the shower or as the comic relief in Dr. Quinn, but on a stage with Spector - he's a compelling character. Hats off. Scroll down to check out our interview.
