Fantasy Rainbow interview

Here at Livemusic we champion and love new music, religiously. When we hear a fairly unknown band that sparks a musical orgasm in our ear members, then we stand up and take a look, while simultaneously trying to listen to everything they have ever released. One of those such bands is Manchester based FANTASY RAINBOW, who won us over after the first listen. Signed to Heist or Hit records, and with a Real Estate/ Wild Nothing sound about them, Oliver Catt, the heart and soul of what is FANTASY RAINBOW has been making a big noise up north. Oliver has recently recorded his debut album in Jack White's producer's studio in Nashville. He took a minute out of his now busy schedule to answer a few questions....

Where do you hail from, how do you fit in to the scene over there and how have your surroundings shaped your sound?

We come from Manchester I suppose, not originally but it's where most of us call home now. I don't think we do really fit into the scene, I don't think many of the manchester bands like us, but I might be wrong, they might just not know who we are.

Where do you source inspiration and how do you go about building songs?

Inspiration comes from everywhere I suppose, Denzel Washington or whatever is around at the time, it could be anything. I (Oliver) write and record everything myself, but there's no real formula, it just sort of happens.

Your new video for Condominium features an interesting dance routine, is this a regular activity for Fantasy Rainbow?

Me and Sam, the other guy in the video, dance all the time. So yeah, that is a regular thing. He loves prince and I'm just really urban so we never stop dancing.

Is there a theme running through Bos Taurus?

If there is a theme, which I'm not sure there is, it's a non-linear narrative of the first 19 years of my life. If I was a ~teenage popstar~ I'd say the them is growing up, but I'm not, so I don't.

Where is the strangest place you've played a concert?

Once played a show in a warehouse to one person and a lot of packing peanuts. Best show we've played probably.

How important are local venues and local scenes for a young bands development?

I think with the internet locality doesn't really matter anymore. I grew up in the middle of North Yorkshire and got signed to a label before I ever moved to a city and the only scene we fell into was based in London/Cardiff/Brighton/Manchester/Newcastle so I don't think there is any locality to music in a country the size of England, it's a little bit different in America.

What is at the end of your fantasy rainbow?

Early retirement

what does the future hold?

The future probably holds some sort of terrible illness, seems to be that way for everybody at the minute.
