Comparisons with Jeff Buckley do not get banded around haphazardly. It's like calling an A-level art student Pablo Picasso or something. Truth be told, it must be one of the most foolish comparators to make seeing as Jeff Buckley was so very unique and gifted.
Tom Odell is one of only a handful of artists who has ever commanded such a comparison. The singer-songwriter from Chichester has the world of music at his feet. Why? Well, his debut EP 'Songs From Another Love' is thoroughly brilliant and with a long list of plaudits in the last few months alone (BBC Sound of 2013 and Brit award nominations) the future is sparklingly bright for the young chap.
Stand out track has to be track three 'Can't Pretend'. The first two tracks are beautiful, however, 'Can't Pretend' carries both beauty, but an extra layer of potency within. It sounds celebratory, almost Elbow-like in its anthemic beauty. It is a thoroughly accomplished commentary on something that so many singer-songwriters try to tackle but come up short when it comes to the punch, namely, what it is to be either in or out of love…
'I guess that's love /// I can't pretend /// I can't pretend…
'Songs From Another Love' is an alarmingly strong debut from Tom Odell. If things go to plan, which we are fairly sure they will, Tom Odell will be commanding a huge amount of attention in the next few months. With plans for a full debut album set to drop in April this year, it seems that the search for the new voice of UK indie music is over. Stand up and pay your respects by listening to his debut right now.
'Songs From Another Love' is out now.
