First things first, you will notice there is no arbitrary number at the bottom of this review. I'm not a fan of summing up someone's hard work with such an inaccurate method of suggesting to you whether it is worth your hard earned money. Secondly, 'The Theremin EP' is a release that could easily polarise opinion. It is very different to Edwards’s previous work and without comparison in the current scene both here in the UK and internationally.

EP Review - Edward Scissortongue 'The Theremin EP'
The Theremin E.P is best referred to as a Sci-Fi opera told in around about 30 minutes. 5 main 'acts' sandwiched between 2 beautifully haunting instrumentals. Edward tells us a story of a dystopian future where humans are enslaved and taunted by Radiation Suit wearing Androids. With each track the main protagonist’s situation gets more direful. The story culminates in a large battle against the Robots. In this regard, it is very much a modern day take on the classic tragedy.

So many influences are immediately obvious. John Carpenter films, Kenji Yamamoto Video Game soundtracks, Arthur C.Clarke stories, and Bethesda’s 'Fallout' series of games. Edward plays a very respectful homage to these works. It never feels like a cheap imitation.

Where Edward stands alone in the UK hip hop scene is with his attention to detail and his ability to transport the listener directly into 'his' world. He uses his peerless grasp of the English language to describe a place or a situation down to the minutiae. As a result, 'The Theremin EP' is genuinely like nothing else you have heard before.

EP Review - Edward Scissortongue 'The Theremin EP'
I have to pay my respects to High Focus label owner Fliptrix for giving Ed full creative and artistic freedom to release something so very different to what many hip hop fans are used to.

For me this was the 2014 release I was looking forward to more than anything and not only does it not disappoint, it exceeds all my expectations. The Theremin EP is defiantly something to enjoy greedily, in one bite. All 7 tracks in one go, alone and away from all distractions. No release to date has told such a wonderfully detailed and imaginative story; it feels like Edward manages to stop time and tell a whole novel in 30 minutes.

'THE THEREMIN EP' is out now on High Focus Records.
