Cities of Glass are made up of Richard Hutchison, David Cuzner, Imran Mair and John Williams (all 17-18) from Hampshire. From the moment that their new EP, ‘From Where We Are’ bursts into life, you can tell that they are heading for big things. Playful guitar leads steal in and out of driving verses, glistening piano tones create atmospherics, while subtle layers of vocals add complex and subtle harmonic effects. Cities’ music is all about layers, and lots of them.
Following the effervescent power-pop sheen of ‘From Where We Are’ has faded to black, ‘Expect Less’ is perhaps the more mature older brother to the energetic title track, with a patient build-up leading to a tumultuous climax. Meanwhile, final track ‘The Only One’ quickly develops into a scintillating final salvo of alt-rock, rounding off the EP in a suitably raucous manner.
Produced by Adam Noble (Muse, Mumford & Sons, Wild Beasts), ‘From Where We Are’ is an explosive collection of tracks from one of the most promising young bands in the country. It may only be three tracks long, but this EP is more than enough to prove that Cities of Glass could well develop into something big – really, really big.
