Calexico have confirmed details for their ninth studio album, shared a new track (see above) and announced full European tour dates for later in the year. All in one foul swoop.

Just. Like. That.

The critically lauded Arizona-based outfit have crossed musical barriers in unmistakeable fashion for the better part of two decades. We first learnt about them through Shane Meadow’s utterly compelling film Dead Mans Shoes; Calexico contribute three slices of music to the OST and, well, much like most tracks that make up that particular soundtrack we were hooked and have been ever since. There is something so ‘worldly’ about Calexico’s sound; years of travel, touring and experience swells from the music they make and this is why each and every record they release seems to extend even further than the last. The story surrounding forthcoming LP ‘Edge Of The Sun’ is as we expected, rife with experience and collaborative processes. This time in Mexico City. Check this out for an excerpt…

Calexico’s new single ‘Cumbia De Donde’ sparks new album countdown
“The first outside invitation came when the band’s Joey Burns was writing the track ‘Bullets and Rocks’ and recognized space for a former Calexico collaborator. “When putting vocals on that song, it immediately reminded me of the Iron & Wine feel,” says Burns. “So I texted Sam (Beam), who wrote back quickly and got it going.”

It continues…

“Encouraged by the experience, the guest list grew to include Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Nick Urata (Devotchka), Carla Morrison, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, multi-instrumentalists from the Greek band Takim, and Neko Case. Burns’ brother John Burns lent a hand to some lyrics and songwriting, and the band’s keyboardist, Sergio Mendoza, stepped up to co-write and arrange certain songs, ultimately co-producing the album along with Burns, John Convertino, and longtime associate Craig Schumacher.”

What we can be sure of is that ‘Edge Of The Sun’ is going to rank up there with Calexico’s most sonically diverse LPs given the list of features they drew upon during their time in Mexico City. What we can also be sure of is that the band are set to embark upon a European tour this April. UK dates are as follows…

28 UK London - O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
30 UK Manchester - The Albert Hall

May

02 UK Belfast - The Limelight
