ALBUM REVIEW: SHLOHMO 'VACATION EP'

Electronic music has become increasing difficult to categorise over the years. With more and more genres and sub-genres emerging faster than you can say 'futurestep' or 'glitch-hop'. We reside in a time filled with over-produced electronic-nonsense, so it has become increasing easy to dismiss anything that sounds remotely synth-based at the first chance you get. Providing you don't have the attention span of a goldfish you will encounter no-such problems with 'Vacation'.

Shlohmo is a complete badman. If you don't yet know about him, get to know, and do it quickly! Originally hailing from that giant-suburb they call Los Angeles he upped-sticks and booted cross-country to that rather-large apple known as New York. Shlohmo has a knack of being able to remix tracks with such style and panache that people forget about the original versions, we have never seen this done with such bewildering consistency before.

The first track on the EP 'The Way You Do' begins slowly but as the track builds, so does the sense of pleasure you receive. The composition is arranged in such a seductive matter that your ears feel like they've just been made love to by girl/guy of your dreams whilst floating on a cloud. It's fucking incredible! - YUK!!!

This is followed by 'wen uuu,' an especially atmospheric number. Shlohmo is more concerned with mood than resolution. Using a haunting sample, “wen uuu” sustains a mixture of sorrow with a sense of unease. While the foggy R&B territory of “wen uuu” has been traversed before, Shlohmo’s production is especially sparse. There’s an real emptiness to the track that makes the listener believe they have lost something along the way.

Vacation draws to a close with the aptly-named track 'It Rained the Whole Time.' This entirely-instrumental track flows beautifully, the uptempo percussion, filled with intricate beats and clicks is married with a laid-back guitar riff akin to a Marks and Sparks advert. This provides a suitable conclusion to a brief but fine showcasing of Shlohmo's talents.

Along with these three tracks are four remixes that purchasers of the 12" can look forward to, they compliment the tone of the record perfectly.

One thing is for sure the appetiser that is 'Vacation' has left us hungry for more from Shlohmo. Vacation is available on 7th February via digital download and in stores on 12" vinyl.
