Noel Gallagher’s new album starts with the exact same elements that made him a millionaire. Every single thing that we have come to expect from the older Gallagher brother is present within precisely 27 seconds from the very start of track one, namely…

A classic countdown (ah 1, 2, 3, 4)
An electric acoustic guitar strum
A series of signature chords
A loose drum roll
A six note bass pattern
Some lyrics…

Album Review - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - Chasing Yesterday
Now while we appreciate that most indie / rock songs start in precisely this fashion, there is something ESPECIALLY customary about Noel’s signature sound. It is what we have come to expect from Noel, no? We are yet to work out whether this is inspired or lazy, what we do know is that it has worked EXTREMELY well for him over the years and that is a FACT we would be cruel to deny him. Sure, the first ‘High Flying Birds’ LP was pretty forgettable but that doesn’t mean he isn’t deserving of another shot now does it?

Even though we are trying extremely hard to think differently, the question that we cannot help ourselves returning to as we listen through the new LP is this…

‘Is it good to see a musician SO very set in his ways?’

Well, there is no straight answer to that question, it all depends where you position yourself as the listener. Die-hard mega fans would probably argue ‘yes’ as it allows them to submerge themselves in slight variants of the thing they are head-over-heels in love with, whereas, the more progressive amongst us would argue that he really does need to do something to switch up the themes and ideas that drive his work.

Album Review - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - Chasing Yesterday
That is not to say that ‘Chasing Yesterday’ sounds identical to ‘Definitely Maybe’; it is literally impossible to stay the same musically for twenty years. If anything, Noel’s new work showcases a far more accomplished and mature musician who is totally at one with the 'style' we have loved for so many years. We love the verve on ‘Lock All The Days’ - that right there is a classic outing and has single written all over it, the same applies for album closer (and lead single) 'Ballad Of The Mighty I' and the introduction to ‘The Right Stuff’ is UTTERLY STUNNING stuff, squeaky trumpet and all. Actually scratch that, the entirety of ‘The Right Stuff’ is all kinds of excellent, dare we say it our favourite track on the LP.

Long story short, ‘Chasing Yesterday’ doesn’t represent anything more than the ‘same old same old’ from Noel and his fledgling flying birds, however, that doesn’t really matter we don't think. We have said it before (and we will say it countless times again) if it ain’t broke why fix it?
