ALBUM REVIEW - DJ FOOD 'MAGPIES, MAPS AND MOONS'

We haven’t heard anything new from DJ Food since January 2011. Almost a year on the time has come for some new Food to feast upon.

The new record, 'Magpies, Maps & Moons', sounds like a 90's horror movie score on a deep jungle backdrop. The opening track Prey intersperses game show style ‘Bah Bah’s’ with the dark croaky sounds of a 90’s rock band. Featuring JG Thirwell, the track is not the best of Food’s creations, although the excellent drum work drives the song throughout, and it would be slightly lost without it.

The longest track on the EP, Magpie Music, proves that DJ Food is still well in touch with his Ninjatune heritage, and is willing to do whatever he wants with his music. The track is a mixing bowl of Food’s usual eclectic sounds and esoteric warblings; however, a lenghty eleven minutes later, you can’t help but wonder what you’ve just experienced. Reassuringly, Percussion Maps leads us into what Food is best known for: a tune full of excitement, anticipation and his trademark Sega video game arrangements.

On a similar note, Discovery Workshop gets the fingers clicking and paints pictures of soundtracks you would expect to see accompany a Bugsy Malone dance off. In Orbit Every Monday is another classic; a ticking time bomb of beats. 'Magpies, Maps and Moons' is a triumph for Food, who has created yet another confusing yet intriguing amalgamation of sounds that will keep you hooked form start to finish and make you want to listen: "over and over and over again."

DJ Food - Magpies, Maps and Moons is out November 7 on Ninjatune Records.
