We still find it pretty amazing that Damon Albarn’s very first solo release is only now seeing the light of day. So selfless is the Blur / Gorillaz / Dr Dee / Rocketjuice and The Moon / Bobby Womack collaborating musical mastermind that it has taken nearing 25 years for a strictly Albarn shaped record to become a reality.

We are just thankful that, finally, the day is upon us to give it a full and thorough spin.

Albarn did the right thing and made his opus available to ‘listen’ online one week before its official release (April 28). We are currently sat taking full advantage of the online offering and, well, even though Albarn offered up five tracks in the build-up to this day, the record still sounds deliciously new.

Album Review - Damon Albarn ‘Everyday Robots’
So seamless are the sonics that make up the backbone of ‘Everyday Robots’ that it is tricky to highlight any particular 'highlights’. The unit is strong and we are extremely happy this is the case. There are anomalies sure, ‘Mr Tembo’ is one of them, but even the slightly (for want of a better term) ‘weirder’ tracks are very much part of an extremely considered package.

How can we best put it? You know when an artist comes along promising an album and you hope they really hone in on what they’re best at? Well, Albarn has done exactly that. He doesn’t take his eye off the prize once, not once and for this he must be commended.

The album is slick yet unrefined, lo-fi yet busy, simple yet incredibly dense. It is a thoroughly brilliant listen and we encourage you to give it the spins it deserves. Everything is so wonderfully in place; the piano keys, the rap verses (Mr Tembo), the gospel choirs, the vinyl crackles and glitchy samples, but most significantly, the verses and hooks.

They make for one hell of a listen, they really do.

Damon Albarn headlines Latitude Festival 2014 (July 17-20) in what must be the most exciting line-up of the Summer thusfar. To learn more about ticketing click here.
