Calexico have been making music for over 13 years, and their newest release ‘Selections from ROAD ATLAS 1998-2011’ is a compilation of tracks they have created in the past, but not previously shared. For a band with such a prolific reputation, this album is somewhat underwhelming, although certainly not predictable.
Tracks such as Boletos are animated, fun and brass filled. Glowing Heart of the World is a beautiful song, featuring impressive guitar and re-introducing the well-known Calexico sound-akin to the soundtrack of a spaghetti western. While listening, you can't help but feel that you are about to have a shoot off with whoever is in the room with you. However, Waitomo and Detroit Stream are lacking the punch that would move them from sounding more like a backing track and into the realms of a vocal-filled song. Not at all boring, the album is an eclectic mix of music and you are left never knowing what will pop up next. An interesting listen, 'Selections from Road Atlas' is bound to be popular with devoted Calexico fans; though it is not the best way to introduce the band to someone who is unfamiliar with their sound.
