Arguably the most eagerly anticipated rap release of the last twelve months has landed and we, much like anyone else who has fallen for A$AP Rocky's lean back charm, were excited to give it that first spin.
Following on from two extremely successful mix tape releases as an unsigned artist is never an easy feat. When you have no limitations, expectations or angry label execs telling you what you should be doing is arguably the best place to be as a musician. You can do what you like and if you are doing it right the results are often spectacular. This was very much the case for A$AP Rocky and much of his crew; no holds barred music making of the highest order before the deal was signed…
We are sorry to say that the Harlem wordsmith struggles to maintain such high standards that saw everyone in the world of music grow so excited about 'LONG.LIVE.A$AP'.
It's those common themes; money, girls, weed and cars over and over again. Literally over and over. Every single track tackles the same old same and for that reason we are not impressed.
When you have the world of rap at your feet, literally waiting with baited breath for something spectacular and your efforts do not even get into second gear, well that can only be deemed as a spectacular failure.
'LONG.LIVE.A$AP' is out now on Columbia Records.
