It’s nice to have A$AP Rocky back. The Harlem native is as entertaining as any of the new generation of rappers currently DOMINATING the rap world and yet he has been quiet for a little while. Why? We hear you scream, well, speaking on his musical hiatus during his recent ‘Red Bull Music Academy Lecture’ (it was no lecture, more a lengthy ego flexing session) A$AP revealed that his musical hiatus was all part and parcel of engineering an expert return to the world of music, a comeback of the highest quality, an LP that staked his claim as one of the very best…

The question is; has A$AP succeeded in his quest?

Album Review - A$AP Rocky - AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP
It goes without saying that in order to ensure everything is in place for an assault on the very top of the rap tree one must ensure that, well, everything is in place. There is so much lazy rap music in the world, however, there is also so much EXCEPTIONAL rap music in the world that to stake a claim for that number one spot (and make no mistake that’s what A$AP Rocky has his eyes on) there are so many elements that must come together to ensure any sort of long-life listening. We are talking cross-generational, handed-down-through-the-ages rap music, like the Nasir Jones’ and the 2Pac’s of this world, and we ain’t gonna lie, we are perplexed as to whether A$AP has delivered an album of said quality levels or not.

In short, what A$AP Rocky has delivered is an utterly strange LP that takes all of the things he has gained plaudits for in the past and turned them up to 11. The dreamy, drug riddled, smokey, hallucinogenic music on display throughout (no more so evident than on middle-of-the-album tracks ‘L$D’ and ‘Excuse Me’) is unlike anything we have ever heard outside of camp A$AP. This isn’t hip hop music, this is cloud rap (is that what you call it?), but then again what even is hip hop nowadays?

At 17 tracks, ‘AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP’ is too long a listen for our taste, however, there are enough interesting moments during the record that make it a decent return from A$AP. But let’s be brutally honest; ‘AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP’ is leagues away from records such as ‘How To Pimp A Butterly’ or ‘Illmatic’ (just two that spring to mind). A$AP is still earning his craft and we are sure there is plenty more to come from him. We’ll be waiting…
